  1. Like most Spanish influenced countries, cockfighting is not only legal, it is an almost every day event. Only those that do not understand countries’ customs and traditions would criticize such actions. Columnist are just trying to make something out of nothing!

Personally, I don’t have a problem with Pedro Martinez being at a cock fight since the sport is big enough to have arenas named for it in the Dominican Republic.
But Americans pay most of Martinez’s salary so until he retires he should probably stay away from the cock fighting.

  3. It doesn’t bother me personally, but I can see where it will ruffle some feathers (sorry… bad pun) around the country. We’re so sensitive as a society to the mistreatment of animals of any kind that there’s no tolerance for this kind of behavior to most of the population. Cockfighting is a part of the culture in the Dominican Republic and as far as Pedro goes, he was invited to be a guest by his Idol Juan Marichal.
Overall it’s no big deal, but because it’s a relative slow time for the sports media (between MLB & NFL seasons) they’ll attach to anything they can sell..

  4. I never approve of animals being used in that manner but having said that i know that it’s legal in many of the Caribbean countries so nothing can be done other than the Mets organization telling Pedro to not go to these events till after baseball season is over.

  5. okay first of all, chicken fights is not the same thing as dog fighting. Pedro is no Michael Vick. Vick tortured animals and what he did was illegal. chicken fights are legal and popular in the Dominican Republic, just like bull fighting in Spain. what i am surprised about is why Pedro would do something like that to attract criticism. if a was a baseball star, i would try my best to avoid getting in trouble or doing something that will upset the public. but i do agree that people are making too much of a fuss about it. there are more important issues (Clemens, Bonds, etc.)

  6. No, I’m Dominican American and it does not bother me.
What does bother me is when people call the Dominican Republic “the dominican”. They leave off the “republic” portion of the proper name.
Edit: Apology accepted. I wasn’t being a smartass, but I see it/hear it often.
